Admission to the Program

Admission to the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program

Upon admissions to MSSU, students may declare Social Work as their projected major. These students are considered pre-social work majors, but does not guarantee admittance into the Social Work program. As a pre-social work major, you will be assigned an advisor in the department to guide through program of study. All students intending to obtain a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) are required to apply to the Social Work program and complete the formal admission process to be fully accepted as a Social Work major.

Before You Apply

You are eligible to apply if you:

• Have completed the 42-hour Missouri Core (general education requirements)
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70
• Have earned a C or better in:
  • PSY 100 – General Psychology
  • SOC 110 – Introduction to Sociology
  • PSC 120 – American Government (or be concurrently enrolled)
• Have completed (or are completing during the application semester) SW 231 – Introduction to Human Services with a grade of C or higher
• Have completed approximately 60 credit hours (preferred)

How to Apply

1. Gather Your Materials 
   1. Before starting the application, have the following ready:
      1. Two references (academic, professional, or one of each)
      2. Completed Professional Reference Form
      3. Completed Academic Reference form
2.  Complete the Application 
   1. Submit the Social Work Application using your MSSU email account.
3. Check Your Email

Additional Information

Transfer Students
Transfer students must first be admitted to MSSU before submitting the Social Work application.

International Students
International students will meet with an advisor in International Student Services to review immigration requirements, complete required CPT documentation, and discuss practicum requirements.
