June 2021, Dr. Melvyn and Mrs. Donna Mosher collection donated 17 Inuit carved pieces and two African art carvings to the Department of Art & Design. Then, in April 2024, Dr. Richard and Mrs. Debbie Reed donated 5 Inuit carved pieces. In conjunction with the 2024 Canada Themed Semester, the Department of Art & Design is setting up a permanent display near the Department of Social Sciences.
Joplin residents David and Debra Humphreys will continue their robust scholarship program at Missouri Southern into the next decade, contributing $1 million that will directly benefit students.
Surrounded by illustrated animal diagrams and many jars, beakers, and microscopes, it’s difficult not to be inspired to embark on one’s own research project. In Karisa Boyer’s classroom, her Science Research students do exactly that.
Missouri Southern is known for its themed semesters, beginning with the China themed semester in 1997. This experience gives students the opportunity to bridge gaps and interact with people from different cultures, becoming global students as MSSU encourages. Immersing ourselves in different ways of life sets us on a fulfilling, lifelong journey, and it begins here on campus.
Whitney Fair’s art was displayed at the Graduate Student Showcase as a love letter, and a goodbye. Born in Joplin and raised in Carthage, Fair became an artist in middle school by buying canvasses and cheap acrylic paint, but he found his true passion when he enrolled at Missouri Southern in 2005, taking sculpting classes from professors Frank Pishkur and Scott Murray.
On South Neosho Boulevard stands Mitchell’s Drug Store where pharmacist Lacy Epperson works as director of pharmacy clinical services. One day she can be found giving vaccinations and dispensing medications; the next, setting up for a community outreach vaccination clinic, or maybe she'll be teaching the store’s diabetes education program classes for people to learn how to self-manage their diabetes alongside other conditions—a program she established; or even overseeing the on-site pharmacogenomics testing. Her day-to-day responsibilities are always different and fulfilling.
The Messicks have established an endowment for the program, providing a current gift and including MSSU in their estate plans. The endowment will offer ongoing financial support, ensuring students have access to modern equipment and resources.
n recognition of the profound impact Missouri Southern had on his life, Russ, along with his wife Suzy, has made a generous six-figure commitment to fund several Russ & Suzy Alcorn Scholarships. Alcorn’s gifts are a combination of current and estate gift commitments.

Missouri Southern will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of women’s athletics at the university with a year-long series of events, stories, and the return of many storied Lion athletes who have participated at MSSU during the past five decades.

Missouri Southern will host an Artist Talk via Zoom with award-winning Canadian photographer Paul Zizka on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

The gift aligns with Crossland’s commitment to education and their belief in the transformative power of learning, company officials said.
