DEPARTMENTAL PLACEMENT EXAMS

English Writing Placement Exam - The Missouri Southern Writing Placement Exam is a timed, no-cost essay available through Blackboard that determines placement into ENG 080, ENG 101, or ENG 111 based on writing ability. While some students may be exempt through AP, transfer, or dual credit, others can challenge their placement by writing the exam, which is evaluated by an MSSU English professor.

Math Placement Exam - Math placement at MSSU is based on your ACT score and chosen major, with most students taking MATH 125 to meet the general education math requirement. Students placed into Math 20 or 30 can appeal by preparing with provided study materials and taking a one-time, 20-minute placement test to advance if they pass.

Spanish Placement Exam - Students with prior Spanish experience are encouraged to take the Modern Languages placement exam, a 50-minute multiple-choice assessment in reading, listening, and grammar available on demand in Blackboard, to determine the best course placement at MSSU. While the exam does not grant credit, students who complete a higher-level course may petition for retroactive credit for lower-level courses.
