On Monday, August 4, 2025, the Joplin City Council presented a proclamation honoring the significant contributions of six area colleges and universities to the region’s economy and community. The proclamation acknowledged the collective impact of Missouri Southern State University (MSSU), Pittsburg State University, Kansas City University, Crowder College, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, and Ozark Christian College.
“MSSU is proud to offer opportunity and growth to our students. We’re honored to be recognized for our commitment to this community and to education,” said Dr. Dean Van Galen, MSSU president.
Mayor Keenan Cortez read the proclamation during the meeting at Joplin City Hall, recognizing the institutions’ support of 2,680 local jobs, an investment exceeding $126 million in capital projects over the past five years, and a student population of over 21,000 who contribute to the city’s workforce and economy.
