Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) welcomed more than 215 high school students from across the region on October 3, 2025, for its annual STEM Discovery Day, an immersive learning event designed to spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through hands-on experiences.
“This university has a large presence of medical and pre-health activities and opportunities,” said Sohan Pinnamaraju, MKEAP student. “We’re trying to show the high school students what’s available at MSSU.”
Participants chose up to three sessions from a lineup of nine interactive offerings, each showcasing a different STEM field through live demonstrations, lab tours, and engaging activities. Popular sessions included biochemistry and medical laboratory sciences, biomedical sciences, and forensic chemistry, where students created liquid nitrogen ice cream and solved mock crime scene mysteries.
Other session topics ranged from microbiology, genetics, and conservation biology to environmental health and safety, industrial engineering, automation, food science, and applied mathematics.
