Overview of gakushiun university

Gakushuin University traces its origins to the “Old Gakushuin,” founded in Kyoto in 1847 as an educational institution for the Imperial Court. After the Asia-Pacific War and the abolition of the nobility, Gakushuin University was established as a private university in 1949.

Today, the university offers extensive academic opportunities with 17 departments across 5 faculties. Exchange students may also enroll in graduate programs, allowing them to take courses at the graduate level (subject to prerequisites and approval).

The campus is located in Mejiro, in the heart of Tokyo, and is known for its peaceful atmosphere and lush greenery that changes beautifully through the seasons.

In April 2026, Gakushuin Women’s College, which belonged to the same educational corporation, will be integrated, and the Faculty of International Cultural Exchange and the Graduate School of International Cultural Relations will be newly established, marking a new beginning.

Exchange Program

Gakushuin University annually accepts approximately 50 exchange students from its overseas partner institutions.

Under the Exchange Program, admission and tuition fees are fully waived.

The study period is set at one semester (half year) or one full academic year, beginning in early April or early September.
