MSSU Welcomes Patriot Guard Riders to Campus for Veterans Day Celebration
Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) proudly welcomed the Patriot Guard Riders to campus on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, for a special celebration honoring those who have served our nation.

The Riders arrived on campus at 11:30 a.m., where they were greeted by students, faculty, and community members in a show of appreciation for veterans. Following the ride, a Veterans Day luncheon was held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Connor Ballroom on the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center.

The luncheon opened with a performance of the national anthem by the MSSU Brass Quintet, followed by remarks from Gary Gray, ride captain of the Patriot Guard Riders and a U.S. Navy veteran. Gray was introduced by Missouri Senator Jill Carter, who thanked him and all veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Gray served aboard the USS Long Beach (CGN-9), a nuclear-guided missile cruiser, during the final years of the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1974. After completing an impressive 45-year career in the aerospace industry, he retired in 2021.

Since joining the Patriot Guard Riders in 2009, following the service-related death of a family friend, Gray has been dedicated to honoring and supporting veterans and their families. Today, he serves as ride captain for the Southwest Missouri Area of Operations, coordinating missions to show respect for fallen heroes and those who continue to serve.
