MSSU to host Women’s Panel
To celebrate International Women’s Month, Missouri Southern’s Social Work department and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will present the Women’s Panel—Powerhouse Hour on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. at MSSU’s Ron Richard Athletic Center.

Eight influential female panelists from the Joplin area will discuss their triumphs and trials to inspire other women within the community:

  • Des Ferguson, client services and advocacy coordinator at Blackbox International.
  • Nichole Ruiz, founder of Sanamora, Our Place, and Pearl Wellness and Consulting.
  • Edith González, social work graduate student.
  • Serita Eldridge, president of Joplin NAACP, program director of Rock Center Coalition.
  • Maya Greenquist, biomedical science major and student athlete at MSSU.
  • Dr. Katricia Pierson, president of Crowder College.
  • Izzie Guess, high school junior and aspirin wildlife biologist.
  • Mishka Cajee, international educator of English as a second language

“Hearing one another’s stories connects us and helps us grow as professionals and individuals,” said Heather Eckhart, professor of clinical social work and member of the DEI committee that will sponsor the event. “Acknowledging International Women's Day and Women's History Month is not only a part of my role here at MSSU but also a life mission to elevate and support fellow females in their journey.”

Other sponsors for the event include Joplin Greenhouse and the Coffee Shop; the League of Lions social work club; Head In The Clouds Designs; OWN, Inc.; and Lafayette House.

This event is free and open to the public.
