Our community ensembles are a way for you, our Joplin-Area community, to join us in performing some of the finest music written – past, present, and future. Please consider joining these ensembles:
The Southern Symphonic Chorus is comprised of The Missouri Southern Concert Chorale and community singers from Joplin and the surrounding cities and towns of the four-state area, under the artistic direction of conductor David L. Sharlow, Chair of Performing Arts and Director of Choral Activities at MSSU. Concert Chorale begins rehearsal of the work at the beginning of the spring semester in their regular MWF noon rehearsals, while community singers rehearse once a week starting the first Thursday of February of that same semester. The week before the performance, which is in mid-April, both choirs come together to form the Southern Symphonic Chorus. To join, please contact Dr. David L. Sharlow.

The Southern Symphony Orchestra serves that population, in Joplin and beyond, who treasure the live performance of orchestral music. Hosted by Missouri Southern State University’s Department of Music, the SSO seeks to perform the best symphonic offerings, and to invite outstanding guest soloists to thrill the audiences of the “Four States.” Comprised of volunteer musicians from the community, and MSSU music students, the SSO supports the Department of Music policy of providing concert performances of its large ensembles free-of-charge to its audiences. To join, please contact Dr. Brandon Robinson.
