Parent/Guardians
We understand how stressful it can be to choose the right college or university for your child.
Here at MSSU we are dedicated to the success of each student attending here; as a matter of fact, we have programs specially designed for first year students.
We also understand parents play an important role in their student's decision to enroll in college. Whether it’s financial or emotional support, parents are often the support system for their student. MSSU provides resources to help with the support of your student.
The prospect of saying goodbye to your student is never easy, but the anxiety is lessened by the knowledge that you've chosen an amazing educational experience in safe, secure living and learning environment.
A college degree represents hard work that will pay big dividends for you and your student, and Missouri Southern State University offers an excellent education at a reasonable price.
Checklist for Parents
Worried you are going to forget an important step in getting your child settled at MSSU? Here's a TO DO list:
- Get to know your child's Admissions Counselor and Financial Aid Counselor. These counselors can be the key to getting your child into the right classes and paying for them! The best way to develop a rapport with your child's counselors is to schedule a campus visit.
- Make sure your child has taken the ACT and verify a copy is on file in the Admissions Office. Admission to the university, academic scholarships and enrollment in some classes will be based on ACT/SAT scores.
- Complete the FAFSA. Even if you don't think you will qualify for Federal Financial Aid, you must complete a FAFSA in order to be considered for& institutional scholarships.
- Secure a dorm room. All students under the age of 21, not living with a parent or spouse, are required to live on campus.
- Once your child receives an official letter of acceptance from the Admission Office, reserve your spot at Southern Welcome. Southern Welcome is a one-day orientation/enrollment session for students and their parents.
- After enrollment, become aware of the student fee due dates. In order to avoid being dropped, you must secure fee payment either through financial aid, private sources or a tuition payment plan.
- Help ensure the success of your college freshman by becoming acquainted with the wealth of support available on the campus of MSSU! Sign up for a parent newsletter, mark your calendar for Parent's Weekend, or send your child a 'Cookie Care Package' -- the First Year Experience department offers many opportunities to support your first year student. The ACTS department also offers academic support programs such as:
- PASS (Path to Academic Success) is designed to assist freshmen whose GPA's fall below 2.0
- Lion Alert Referral System - an early warning system to alert MSSU counselors when a student is struggling with class attendance, poor grades or disruptive behaviors.
- Mid-term grades - posted at the mid-point of each semester on LioNet to help students be informed of their progress in classes.
