JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern State University Ceramics Department will present its 2012 Student Pottery Sale from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10 and Tuesday, Dec.11.
The sale will take place in the Spiva Art Gallery in the Fine Arts building at MSSU.
The unique, handcrafted gifts were created in the MSSU Ceramics Studio and are being offered just in time for the holidays. according to Frank A. Pishkur, associate professor of art.
"This exhibition and sale of pottery is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn and develop skills needed to make a living as an artist," Pishkur says. "Students learn how to structure a sale, how to price works and how to set up, develop, and present an exhibit. These are all necessary skills that take time and practice to master."
Pishkur says the sale provides a good opportunity for students to recoup some of the costs they expended during the semester paying for materials as well as part of the cost of the class.
"In essence, every artwork that someone purchases from a student is a small scholarship to that student," he states.
Hundreds of microwavable, oven and dishwasher food-safe pottery as well as sculptural objects will be available. This sale provides an opportunity to see and collect unique works. The work on display will include a full spectrum ranging from beginners all the way to semi-pro and professional level pottery.
A percentage of the proceeds also will be used directly for purchasing tools and equipment for the MSSU Ceramics program.
