JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Missouri Southern State University faculty members Dr. David Locher, Dr. Steven Wagner and Dr. Daniel Marsh received special recognition during the 58th Commencement ceremonies at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Students and colleagues nominating the teachers for the awards praised them for their commitment to students and to Missouri Southern.
* Dr. David Locher was named “Outstanding Teacher.”
* Dr. Steven Wagner was named “Outstanding International Education Teacher.”
* Dr. Daniel Marsh was named “Outstanding Faculty Advisor.”
Dr. David Locher, professor of sociology and head of the Social Science department, received his bachelor’s degree in general studies and his master’s and doctorate in sociology from Kent State University. He is the author of Collective Behavior (Prentice-Hall, 2002). He joined the MSSU faculty in 1996.
One student nominating Dr. Locher for Outstanding Teacher wrote, “Dr. Locher explains things in realistic terms that make understanding and application of concepts easy. He loves helping students master what he has to teach.” Another student wrote, “Every semester I recommend him as a great professor to take a class with on campus. He’s the type of professor that makes me look forward to coming to class.”
Dr. Steven Wagner, professor of history, received his bachelor’s degree in history and political science and his master’s degree and doctorate in history from Purdue University. He is the author of Eisenhower Republicanism: Pursuing the Middle Way. He joined the Missouri Southern faculty in 2000.
One student nominating Dr. Wagner for Outstanding International Education Teacher wrote, “Dr. Wagner consistently challenges his students to think critically about and learn from the past. His work ethic and personal standards of excellence are an inspiration to me and many others who have taken his courses.” Another nominator said, ”He is passionate about his discipline, knowledgeable and intelligent as well as being accessible and friendly.”
Dr. Daniel B. Marsh, professor of physical science in the Chemical and Physical Sciences department, received his bachelor’s degree from Drury College, his master’s from the University of Arkansas and his doctorate from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He joined the faculty of Missouri Southern State University in 1997.
One student nominating Dr. Marsh for Outstanding Faculty Advisor wrote, “He has served as a great advisor for classes, along with serving as a great advisor when it came time for me to apply to graduate school. Dr. Marsh went above and beyond to help me with the application process.” Another student wrote, “He shows passion for the material he teaches and has a strong desire to see each one succeed in his or her academic pursuits.”
