JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Are you ready to join the Pride? Lion Pride Weekend is for all new MSSU students and their families. The weekend is packed with activities to help students become acquainted with Joplin, meet new friends,and learn what it means to be a LION!
On Sunday, Aug. 19, the First Year Student Convocation will be held in Taylor Performing Arts Center from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. The afternoon will feature comments from MSSU President Dr. Bruce Speck. Members of the Administration and University Experience instructors and student assistants will be present. Parents are invited to bring cameras to take photos of new students from their families at the Medallion Ceremony.
“Campus Craze” is a longstanding Missouri Southern tradition. It will take place from 6 – 8 p.m. Sunday night on the campus Oval. The event features live music, free food, the President’s Ice Cream Social, campus tours, photos with the MSSU Lion and door prizes.
It starts on Friday, Aug. 17 and doesn't stop until Sunday evening! Following is the schedule of events.
Friday, Aug. 17
Three on Three Basketball and Volleyball Tournaments,
Beimdiek Recreation Center Basketball Courts
10 a.m. - Noon
Join us in the Beimdiek Recreation Center for a three on three basketball tournament and volleyball tournament. If you have a team, bring it! If not, we’ll find you one. Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.
Free Fitness Classes,
Beimdiek Recreation Center Fitness Room
10 a.m. - Noon
Get your day off to a good start with a great workout! Our personal trainers will lead two fitness classes. Choose one or stay for both!
Zumba Lesson – 10 a.m.-11 a.m,
Yoga/Pilates Lesson - 11 a.m. -Noon
Noon - 3 p.m.
Need stuff for your room? We will shuttle students and families to the Northpark Mall, Target, and Wal-Mart. Shuttles will depart from the circle drive in front of McCormick Hall every 20 minutes.
Kick-Off Cookout, MSSU Oval
4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Come enjoy great food and great company! The Kick-Off Cookout is free to new MSSU students. Family and guests are $5 each.
Slip and Slide, MSSU Oval
5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Whether you’re fully clothed or wearing your swimsuit, come cool off on our GIANT slip and slide!
Outdoor Movie, MSSU Oval
p.m. - Midnight
Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a movie under the stars. Refreshments will be served.
Saturday, Aug. 18
Phi Eta Sigma Day of Service
9 a.m.- 2 p.m.
Roll up your sleeves for our annual tradition of service to our community. We will partner with the MSSU chapter of Phi Eta Sigma (national freshman honor society) to volunteer with the Joplin Trails Coalition. We’ll provide lunch and transportation! An RSVP is required. Shuttles will depart from the circle drive in front of McCormick Hall.
Speed Meeting, BSC Lion’s Den
7 p.m.-9 p.m.
Do you want to get to know a lot of people fast? Come to the Lion’s Den in Billingsly Student Center for a round of Speed Meeting. Refreshments will be served.
Beimdiek Recreation Center Phelps Theater
6 p.m.- 8 p.m.
You know how to play, so come play to win MSSU gear and CASH!
Toga Dance Party
9 p.m. - Midnight
Toga parties are a college tradition. Join us on the Oval for a Toga Dance Party. We will provide togas for the first 100 guests. Refreshments will be served.
Sunday, Aug. 19
First-Year Student Convocation
Taylor Performing Arts Center
2 - 3 p.m.
The First-Year Student Convocation is a ceremony designed to officially welcome new students and parents to the MSSU family. You’ll meet the President of MSSU as well as Deans, Department Heads, Alumni, and Course Assistants. You’ll also learn a few of our campus traditions! Parents, bring your cameras for the Medallion Ceremony. An RSVP is appreciated, but not required. Dress is business-casual.
6 - 8 p.m.
A long-standing tradition at MSSU, Campus Craze is the final party before classes start on Monday. Campus Craze is held on the Oval and features live music, free food, the President’s Ice Cream Social, campus tours, photos with the MSSU Lion, and fantastic door prizes.
