JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern State University Choral Society will present its "Summer Pops Concert" at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 31.
Due to the tornado damage to the First Community Church of Joplin, the venue for the performance will be the First Baptist Church located at Broadway and Roane St. in Webb City.
Beginning with Baroque composer Henry Purcell's "Now Shall the Father Be Praised on High," a series of three pieces reflect on aspects of life including Joseph Martin's "Follow the River," Harry Simeone's arrangement of "Country Style," based on a square dance, and "Walk a Little Slower, My Friend" composed by Don Besig.
Eleanor McLemore, Choral Society accompanist, will perform a piano medley of two patriotic selections, "America the Beautiful" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" arranged by Tornquist and Bock.
The concert will conclude with arranger David T. Clydesdale's stirring patriotic musical "I Salute You." Featuring soloist Melanie Soule of Joplin along with narrators Annette Nethery of Joplin and Vern Walter of Webb City, the work honors not only the men and women of our military, but also all of those who unselfishly have given of their time and energy to help with the Joplin tornado cleanup.
It is also a musical that celebrates freedom and the flag.
Under the direction of Dr. Al Carnine, MSSU professor of Music, the concert is open to the public without charge.
