Cross country teams
sweep Regional Titles

--  The Missouri Southern men's and women's cross country teams swept the 2009 NCAA Division II South Central Regional this morning at Abilene Christian University. The Southern women win their third in a row, while the men win their second title in the last three years.

The Southern women once again set a new record low point scoring total as two weeks after scoring an MIAA-record low 18 points at the conference meet, the Lions again scored 18 points and set a new South Central Region record for low point total. It is also the first time that a woman's program has won three-straight regional titles.

Kimi Shank won her first regional title after placing second the last two years, finishing the 6k course in a time of 20:59.05, shaving two seconds off of her time from the MIAA meet. Ashley Siler and Ashley Bunch finished second and third, respectively, while Courtney Waltbillig (5th), Marlee Tegenkamp (7th) and Silvia Pineda (10th) all placed in the top ten for the Lions. Each earned All-Region status for their efforts.

Dora Eastin was 30th, as the Lions defeated second-place Dallas Baptist by 62 points. Shank, as well as the Lions, have yet to be defeated by a Division II opponent this yea. The Lions, who were ranked third in Division II coming into the meet, defeated three nationally ranked opponents as Dallas Baptist was 17th, Truman State was 14th and Pittsburg State was 21st. 

The Southern men defeated second-place Southwest Baptist by 25 points as five different Lions finished in the top 15 to earn All-Region status. Josh Mathis was seventh after finishing the 10k courses in a time of 31:42.68, while Dustin Dixon and Aki Nummela were ninth and 11th, respectively. Jarkko Jarvenpaa and Brennan Benkert were 14th and 15th. Each runner was named to the All-Region team.

Sam Pogue was 48th and Nick Niggeman was 68th and the Lions win their second regional title in the last three years winning also in 2007 when Southern hosted both the regional and the national meet.

The Southern men (1st), as well as Southwest Baptist (2nd) and Pittsburg State (3rd) all advance to the national meet, making it a clean sweep for the MIAA. Joining the three teams at the meet from the region will be individual champion, Amos Sang from Abilene Christian and third place finisher Laban Sialo from Central Missouri.

The Lions men came into the event ranked 11th nationally and defeated 15th ranked Abilene Christian, 16th ranked Pittsburg State, 19th ranked Southwest Baptist and 20th ranked Central Missouri.

The Southern women (1st), as well as second place Dallas Baptist will advance their teams to the national meet, and will be joined by a pair of Truman State runners (Dani Dell'Orco and Ann Ratermann) as the top finishing individuals not on an advancing team.

This is the third year in a row that both the Missouri Southern cross country programs have advanced to the national meet and the fourth year in a row for the men. Both teams will have a week off before heading to Evansville, Indiana to take part in the 2009 NCAA National Championships hosted by Southern Indiana on November 21.
