| Bryan Schiding is in his
first year as an assistant coach with Missouri Southern after spending six
years as the assistant coach in cross country and track and field at Missouri
S&T. While at S&T, Schiding was twice named as the NCAA Division II regional "Coach of the Year", earning the honor in 2007 for the Great Lakes Region after the Miners posted their highest finish ever at an NCAA championship meet, then again in 2009 as the Missouri S&T men's team swept the Great Lakes Valley Conference titles with strong performances from its sprinters and jumpers keying the title runs. Schiding also helped coach three different pole vaulters last season at S&T to a height over 17 feet. S&T sent eight individuals to NCAA championship competition in 2009 and all eight came home with All-America honors. Jordan Henry finished as the national runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Championships for the second consecutive year and took fifth outdoors, while Peter Hollenbeck and Dan Hellwig tied for eighth in the indoor season. Hollenbeck would finish fourth at the outdoor meet and javelin thrower Heath Groom finished sixth. The women's team also had two All-America efforts at the outdoor meet which came from Tamara McCaskill with a third in the high jump and Aubrey Moore in the 400-meters. The men's team finished in a tie for 12th overall at the 2007 indoor nationals with all three of its individuals -- whom Schiding worked with during the season -- placing in scoring positions at the meet. Tyrone Smith, who earned a trip to the Beijing Olympics in 2008, finished second in the long jump, while Lucas Handley took third and Jordan Henry seventh in the pole vault during that season. In 2008, Henry was the national runner-up in the indoor pole vault at the national meet and fourth place finisher at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships after finishing as the GLVC champion in the event in both conference meets. Henry, who became the first pole vaulter at S&T to ever clear 17 feet during the 2008 season, was named as the GLVC's "Student-Athlete of the Year" and Academic All-America following both his junior and senior seasons in the program -- he was also named as the GLVC's Paragon Award winner in 2009 -- and was joined on the All-America stand by Jared Anders during the indoor season (where he finished seventh) and Peter Hollenbeck at the outdoor meet (sixth). The Miner sprinters and field event competitors have had great success under Schiding's guidance. In his first six years at Missouri S&T, he has had athletes set 61 new school records and has had 147 all-conference performances. Missouri S&T has also seen four individuals earn the Great Lakes Valley Conference "Freshman of the Year" award and had 67 individuals qualify for the NCAA Championships with 22 earning All-America honors. Missouri S&T has had a great deal of national success in the pole vault, where Henry has earned five All-America awards, Hollenbeck three and J.R. Skola and Lucas Handley two apiece over the last six seasons; Henry and Skola have been national runner-ups in the event. In addition, Whitney Rasmussen finished fifth in the high jump at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in 2005 -- as the only freshman on the podium in that event -- while Jamie Webb earned eighth place honors in the 100-meter dash at the 2005 outdoor championships and also earned league championships in the event. One of the more decorated individuals in track recently has been Tyrone Smith, who earned numerous awards for his performances in the long jump including two national runner-up finishes and a fourth place showing in the event at the 2006 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. Smith, who was named as the top field athlete for the Great Lakes Region for the 2006 indoor season, was the Great Lakes Valley Conference champion in the indoor (2006 and 2007) and outdoor long jump as well as the indoor triple jump in both 2006 and 2007; he was named as the GLVC "Male Athlete of the Year" for the indoor track season. Smith went on to set the Bermuda national record in the long jump to later earn him a spot on Bermuda's national team that competed at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China in August 2008. Smith finished 15th in the competition in Beijing, just three centimeters away from a spot in the finals. Prior to joining the Missouri S&T coaching staff, Schiding served as an assistant track and field coach at LaSalle University in Philadelphia for the three seasons. He coached both the men's and women's field events and also worked with the sprinters and hurdlers. The men's team won the Atlantic-10 indoor championship in 2003 -- its first title in seven years -- and finished second in the conference during the outdoor season. Meanwhile, the women's team had a second place finish in at the league's indoor meet in 2002. He has helped coach teams to a total of five Atlantic-10 Conference championships, including two men's and two women's titles in cross country, and those teams established 11 new school records during his three seasons on the staff. Schiding was the team captain while competing at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., from where he graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He set the school record in the indoor long jump and won conference titles in the long jump (twice) and triple jump; he earned seven all-conference awards during his career at Bucknell. Schiding also competed in the sprint and hurdle events as well as the relays. He earned his masters degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from LaSalle. Schiding currently resides in Joplin with his wife, Stephanee. |
