Missouri Southern State College’s 2002-03 athletics season finished tied for 67th overall in the final National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division II Directors’ Cup standings with 230 points. Southern tied with Harding University (Ark.) for 67th in the standings that reward the top athletics programs from around the country at all levels, NCAA Division I, II and III as well as NAIA.

MSSC scored points in four sports in 2002-03, led by a 69-point effort that resulted from the Lions cross country team finishing seventh at the NCAA Division II Championships. Those 69 points had Missouri Southern in 45th after the fall season concluded.

In the winter, Southern jumped to 41st after the indoor track & field season came to a close. The men tallied 64.5 points for their 12th place finish, while the women’s team put up an additional 52.5 points for placing 20th.

MSSC’s lone scorer in the spring season was the men’s golf team, which accrued 44 points by getting into the Central Regional.

The NACDA Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the organization and the USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 14 sports, seven women’s and seven men’s. Each national champion receives 100 points. In the sports of men’s and women’s track & field, the best finish for each gender –– either indoors or outdoors –– is taken into effect.

The University of California Davis scored 857 points and took home its sixth Division II NACDA Cup. Grand Valley State (Mich.) was second with 797.5, followed by North Florida (628.5), California State-Bakersfield (597.5) and South Dakota State (562).
