Five from Southern named MIAA Presidential Scholars

Five student-athletes from Missouri Southern State College have been named to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Presidential Scholar list, the conference announced recently.
Freshman Clayton Burleson (Neosho, Mo.) was among 19 male student-athletes around the MIAA to receive the honor. Freshman Christal Arnall (Stella, Mo.), sophomore Lacey McMunn (Parsons, Kan.) and juniors Rachel Patterson (Raytown, Mo.) and Amy Stredney (Abilene, Kan.) were among 31 female student-athletes named to the list.
To gain the MIAA Presidential Scholar distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative 4.0 GPA and completed a minimum of two teams of attendance at the nominating institution.
Burleson, a member of the Lions golf team, competed in two tournaments during the 2002-03 season, both in the fall. The political science major averaged 80.5 strokes this past season
Arnall and Patterson are both members of the Lady Lions track & field team.
Patterson was an all-conference runner in 2003 in outdoor track & field in the 10,000-meter run (fifth place) and indoors in the 5,000 (sixth place). Also a member of Southern’s cross country team, the elementary and special education major was among the team’s top five runners throughout much of the season.
Arnall competed in the pole vault for MSSC during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Indoors, she posted her best height of 9’-8” at the Missouri Southern Radio Shack Invitational. Outdoors, her best mark was 9’-4” at the Pittsburg State Open.
McMunn and Stredney are two competitors on the Lady Lions tennis team.
McMunn earned first-team all-conference laurels at No. 2 singles, with an 11-9 record, and was also an honorable mention selection at No. 1 doubles, where she and teammate Sheryl Posch posted a 14-8 ledger.
Stredney, a junior transfer in 2002-03 from Cowley County Community College, finished with a 7-10 mark at No. 2 doubles with teammate Kim McMunn. She was also 6-12 overall in No. 4 singles play.
