Application for Admission - Procedure

 Applications are accepted starting the first week of February through May 1st each year for the fall semester. Only one class is chosen each year (fall semester).

To be considered for acceptance into the Respiratory Care program, the applicant must:

Step One: Application

Submit an Application Form and Criminal Background Check Form to the  Respiratory Therapy Department Office on the Missouri Southern Campus with the $70 application fee.

Step Two: HOBET Examination

Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test-HOBET 

Please call Christie Norvell, in the Respiratory Care Department at MSSU to schedule, 417-625-9848. Office hours are Monday-Friday 8 am - 5 pm. Application and application fee must be received by the  Respiratory Therapy Department office at MSSU PRIOR to the examination. A photo ID is required at check in for the examination.

Applicants for whom English is a second language must take the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) and obtain a minimum score of 600 or 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL. Non-English speaking applicants must meet the same general admission requirements as all others applying for the Respiratory Therapy Program. The TOEFL tests are offered only at selected sites and select dates in Missouri. Applicants are responsible for making their own arrangements for taking the TOEFL tests.

Step Three: Documents

Submit the following documents.

  • Official Transcripts:
  • High school or GED
  • College transcripts
  • Vocational or Technical School, if applicable
  • Three letters of reference
  • Background check form

Step Four: Information Gathering Interview

Applicants whose HOBET composite score is 43 or above and has supplied the above documents will be contacted and scheduled for an interview with program staff. All selected applicants will submit to a drug screen.
