Outside right graphicMs. Stacy Barelos, Assistant Professor of Music, presented at Getting Nowhere, an international festival celebrating the centenary of John Cage. This festival is held in York, UK and is sponsored by the University of York. Ms. Barelos presented a paper and presentation on Cage’s Water Music.

Dr. Joey Brown, Professor of English, was invited by World Literature Today to be a guest presenter on opening night for the Neudstadt Literary Festival, held at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Brown presented with five other contemporary poets, sharing poetry related to the theme of the festival. The Neudstadt Literary Festival is the largest festival of its kind in the world. Dr. Brown was also a featured reader at the First Sunday Reading Series in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Michael Garoutte, Professor of Chemistry, cofacilitated a one-day Introductory Workshop at Rockhurst University pertaining to POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning). He has also been contracted as a consultant for a NASNTI Grant at Murray State College in Tishomingo, Okla. As the consultant, Dr. Garoutte recently gave a one-day workshop for their science faculty and is providing feedback for inquiry-based science labs written by their faculty, a three-year commitment.

Ms. Deb Gerecke, Assistant Professor and Director of Dental Hygiene, gave a presentation entitled “Implementing Technology in Allied Dental Education” at the annual conference for Allied Dental Program Directors in Chicago, IL in June 2012.

Dr. Conrad Gubera, Professor of Sociology, was a guest speaker at the national conference of Sustainability and Aftereffects of Major Disasters in St. Louis. He was also the guest speaker at the Alpha Chi member induction ceremony in October 2012 on the MSSU campus.

Dr. Kip Heth, Associate Professor of Biology, was a guest lecturer for the Missouri Department of Conservation in October 2012. He gave a lecture entitled “The Fishes of Southwest Missouri” as part of a Master Naturalist Series.

Dr. Elke Howe, Associate Professor of Engineering Technology, gave a presentation to sophomores in the Algebra II class at Carl Junction High School. She ran a simulation to show students typical work activities of industrial engineers. She was also a guest speaker as part of a supervisor training workshop sponsored by the Grand Lake Manufacturing Council. She gave a seminar entitled “Root Cause Analysis” in October 2012.

Dr. William Huffman, Professor of Business Administration – Accounting, gave two presentations at the Heartland Regional Council of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Educational Conference in Springfield, Mo in September 2012. The presentations were “Creating an Ethical Work Environment” and “Developing a Personal Ethics Statement”.

Dr. Donna Johnson, Associate Professor of Biology, was a guest lecturer for the Department of Food Science at the University of Arkansas in September 2012. She gave a lecture entitled “Cheese: Is It an Art or a Science?”.

Ms. Erica Little, Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene, gave a presentation entitled “Implementation of Ultra-Sonic Scaling Techniques” at the Ultra-Sonic Scaling Teaching Institute in York, Penn. in July 2012.

Dr. Dave Smith, Professor of Accounting and Department Chair of Accounting, Economics, and Finance, gave a presentation entitled “Effectively Using Microsoft Outlook” to the Joplin Tri-State Institute of Management Accountants meeting in September 2012.

Mr. Richard Spencer, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, was a featured guest KZRG radio station. Mr. Spencer discussed various aspects of the criminal justice program.
