Our Recreational Reading collection is comprised of popular crime, romance, mystery, science fiction, western, and fantasy titles. We also have Award Winning Juvenile and Young Adult collections, including: The Newbery Medal, The Michael L. Printz Award, Mark Twain Readers Award, and Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award.
The friends group serves as a volunteer support organization, encouraging the community interest in the library and promoting a fuller understanding of its purpose, programs, and potential.
Through its generosity, the organization fosters gifts, donations, endowments, and memorials to the library, enabling the acquisition of distinctive and valuable materials.
Various categories of membership are available. Funds are committed for the purchase of book, periodicals, and other scholarly resources. One year and Lifetime/Corporate memberships are available.
As friends of Spiva Library you will enjoy many benefits, such as discounts on select cost-based library events/programs, and opportunities to participate in special activities including readings and lecture series by notable authors and faculty seminars.
The Literary Lions Book Club selects one book each semester to read and discuss. Past selections have included popular fiction titles including Gone Girl and Winter Bone and international semester theme picks such as After the Wall and Talk Thai.
Depending on the selection, past meetings have included group discussion, author Q&A, and viewing movie adaptions. Literary Lions is sponsored by Missouri Southern Alumni Association & Spiva Library. Membership per semester is $25 donation and only $15 for members of Friends of the Library.
What is the Interlibrary Loan? Interlibrary Loan (ILL) involves tens of thousands of academic, public, and special libraries in Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America in the lending and brorrowing processes . It affords users the ability to access millions of books, as well as dissertations, journals, videos, and much more, that are unavailable at Spiva Library or through our subscription databases. The library will request materials on your behalf for those items that are not available at the Spiva Library.
You may make a request online on the library home page under the Library Services tab, then select request items. Forms are also available at the Main Circulation and Reference desks.
Community library card holders are charged a minimum $4 cost when checking out Interlibrary Loan Requests.
Computer & Printer Usage
There are selected workstations on the 1st & 3rd floors of the library that may be used by community members.
- Public users must present a photo ID at either the Reference Desk (3rd floor) or the Circulation desk (1st floor) and be signed in to use a computer.
- Public users are limited to 1 hour of use per day.
- MSSU students do have priority access to the computers.
- Public users must purchase a visitor’s Lion Card in order to print. The cost is $10, $5 for the card (reusable) with a $5 printing balance.
- All workstations are connected to network printers that can both print in color and B&W.
- The cost is 10 cents per B&W print and 50 cents per color print.
- Double-sided printing available. Each side will be charged as a separate print.
The library has four photocopiers: three B&W and one color copier. Three of the photocopiers require the use of a Lion Card. One B&W copier accepts coins. B&W copies are 10 cents each. Color copies are 50 cents each.
To fax documents at the Library go to the Main Circulation Desk on the 3rd floor. Some costs may apply:
