Admission Requirements for Freshmen

Persons with citizen in another country are encouraged to investigate International Admission requirements.

It's easy to become a student at Missouri Southern.

Admission requirements depend on your age and educational background.

The following information is for citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Admission Time line

The admission process should begin in the fall of your senior year in high school. Here's our suggested admission time line:

September through December
  • Apply for admission.
  • Visit Campus. The Admissions Department offers many ways to become acquainted with beautiful, secure campus. Reserve your spot for one of our Discovery Days, Touchdown TourSaturday tour, or a weekday campus tour
  • Take the ACT or SAT. These scores impact your admission decision, academic scholarships and even class enrollment.
  • Tell your high school counselor to send MSSU a 6th, 7th, or 8th semester transcript in a sealed envelope or faxed to 417. 659.4429
  • Look for MSSU's Admissions Counselors at college fairs or your high school.  You are also invited to attend our College Fair held on MSSU's campus in October of each year.
January through March
  • Complete your FAFSA.
  • Honors program deadline - February 15th
  • SEOG deadline - February 15th
  • Patron scholarship deadline - March 1
  • Apply for campus housing
April through July
  • FAFSA completion deadline - April 1
  • All financial aid documentation must be provided to financial aid department to guarantee processing for 1st disbursement - May 1 deadline.

Current High School Students Admission Requirements

  • Complete your application for admission.
  • Pay one-time $25.00 application fee.
  • Submit high school transcripts from the 6th, 7th, or 8th semester transcript showing a GPA and rank in class.
  • Mail or fax (417.659.4429) high school transcript (directly from the high school) in a sealed envelope to MSSU-Admissions, 3950 E Newman Road, Joplin MO  64801.
  • Provide ACT/SAT scores. Check with your high school to see if your scores are included on your transcript.  If they are NOT on your transcript, contact ACT to have a copy sent to MSSU.
  • Investigate your financial aid options.
  • Once you receive your official letter of acceptance -- please follow instructions for admitted students .

Once your application packet is complete, it will be reviewed to see if you meet admission requirements. To be admitted you must have a high school GPA of 2.25 or higher OR rank in the top 50% of your class OR have an ACT composite score of 21 or higher. Applications packets that do not meet these requirements automatically go to the review committee. The State of Missouri provides a list of 'Core High School Curriculum' to help prepare students for college courses. Students who have not completed high school core curriculum requirements may still be admitted, however; their chances of success in college may be diminished.

Home school Students Admission Requirements

Once your application packet is complete, it will be reviewed to see if you meet admission requirements. To be admitted you must have a high school GPA of 2.25 or higher OR rank in the top 50% of your class OR have an ACT composite score of 21 or higher. Applications packets that do not meet these requirements automatically go to the review committee.

High School Graduates Under 21 Admission Requirements

  • Complete your application for admission.
  • Pay one-time $25.00 application fee.
  • Submit a copy of your final high school transcript containing your date of graduation, rank in class and final GPA. This transcript must come to MSSU directly from the high school in a sealed envelope or may be faxed directly from your high school to 417.659.4429.
  • Provide ACT scores. You may have to contact ACT to have a copy of your scores to MSSU.

  • Once you receive your official letter of acceptance -- please follow instructions for admitted students.

Students who've taken a GED Admission Requirements

  • Complete your application for admission.
  • Pay one-time $25.00 application fee.
  • Submit a copy of your GED scores.  These scores will be evaluated for a rank in class equivalency. If you do not have a copy of your GED certificate with scores, you will need to contact the state in which you were tested.
  • If you are under the age of 21, you will need to submit ACT scores. You will need to contact ACT and request a copy of your scores sent to MSSU.
  • Once you receive your official letter of acceptance -- please follow instructions for admitted students.
