JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Members of the Missouri Southern State University family--including students, faculty and staff--are benefiting from three funds and tornado-based scholarships established to help victims of the May 22 tornado in Joplin.

The devastating tornado touched the lives of more than 220 students, faculty, and staff members at Missouri Southern State University.

One faculty member and one student were killed and the spouse of a staff member died. Several others were injured.

Many others suffered damage to property and livelihoods. More than 145 homes were destroyed or damaged and 120 cars were destroyed or damaged.

Several students lost jobs when their employers' businesses were leveled by the storm.

· The Tornado Emergency Relief Fund distributed $36,225 in grants to 161 faculty, staff and students in late June

· The Tornado Emergency Relief Fund will distribute another $4,725 in grants to an additional 21 students by the end of September.

· The Foundation will also award two separate $1000 tornado-based scholarships, provided by a private foundation, by the end of September.

· Financial Aid will distribute $15,000 in tornado relief funds provided by USA Funds to students by the end of September.
