Nursing Society Program Focuses on Tornado

JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The MSSU Nursing Honor Society will present the CEU program “The Joplin Tornado: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” from 8:30 a.m. -1 p.m. on Oct. 8 on the third floor ballroom of Billingsly Student Center.

The Nursing Honor Society welcomes area nurses, nursing students, all health care professionals, and friends to the program. The Annual Memorial Conference is being held in recognition of victims of the May 22 Joplin tornado.

The cost to attend is $35 for Nursing Honor Society members, $20 for nursing students from MSSU or other programs or $40 for non-members. Dues may be paid for $30.

The program will: analyze disaster response plan in theory and practice; discuss strategies to assessing and treating efficiently; explore the impact of the disaster on the psychosocial well-being of survivors; and summarize lessons learned in disaster response.

Presenters include Dan Pekarek, Linda Dean, Regina Thomas, Dr. Frank Veer, Dr. David Hagedorn, Melinda Estes, Judy Russell, Dr. Tia Strait, Jimmy Burgess and Randy Gariss.

The Nursing Honor Society supports the K’Alice Breinig Scholarship, established in 2010. In addition to the annual donation to the scholarship fund, this year the MSSU Nursing Honor Society will make a donation to Diversified Health Occupations in the Franklin Technology Center and the R-VIII School District, impacted by the tornado.
