The devastating tornado that hit Joplin on May 22, 2011, has touched the lives of more than 220 students, faculty, and staff members at Missouri Southern State University. We are saddened to report that one faculty member and one student were killed, in addition to the spouse of a staff member. Several others were injured. Fortunately, many lives were spared, although severely impacted. To date, we know that more than 130 homes were destroyed and another 15 were damaged. In addition, 120 cars were destroyed or damaged and some students have lost their jobs because their employer’s business was destroyed.
The Missouri Southern Foundation has established a "Tornado Emergency Relief Fund" to assist these members of University family. Donations can be made to the Fund in the following ways.

Decisions regarding grants from the fund will be made by a committee comprised of representatives from a variety of areas on campus. IRS regulations prohibit gifts to be designated for a specific individual.

Joplin, MO.- At the direction of Gov. Jay Nixon, the Missouri Department of Public Safety has assumed control of the process of locating unaccounted-for individuals as a result of Sunday's devastating tornado in Joplin. At a morning news conference, the department released a list of 232 individuals for whom an official missing persons report had been filed. More than 60 law-enforcement and emergency-management personnel, including Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers; State Emergency Management Agency staff; federal partners; and local detectives are working under the department's direction on this top priority.
