Department Chair, English & Philosophy

The Department of English and Philosophy at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri, invites applications for the position of Department Chair, appointment to begin August 2016. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in English and prior leadership and/or administrative experience.  Strong record of and commitment to undergraduate teaching are crucial; strong publication record is highly desirable.  The specialty is open, but expertise in World or American literature is especially welcome.  Salary and rank are negotiable.

The Chair’s primary duties are undergraduate teaching (six hours per semester) and the coordination of department affairs. The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and serves as the chief administrative officer of the department, providing leadership in the area of teaching, research, faculty engagement, student development, and fiscal management.

The Chair oversees approximately 30 colleagues, including full-time faculty members and adjunct instructors of first-year writing.The department offers BA majors in Literary Studies and in Professional/Technical Writing and works with the Teacher Education department to offer the BSE degree for future secondary school English teachers.  The department also offers a range of creative writing courses and collaborates with the university’s Institute for International Studies program.

Assistant Professor English, British Literature, Tenure-Track

The Department of English and Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position with a specialty in British Literature post-1800, responsible for teaching Romanticism, Victorian literature, Modernism, and/or contemporary literature; appointment to begin August 2016.  Highly desired are candidates with supporting background or experience in teaching literary theory; Ph.D. in English must be in hand by August 1, 2016. The successful candidate will teach a 4/4 load of general education and upper-division courses in late British literature as well as first-year writing. In addition to scholarship and teaching, responsibilities will include participation in department, school, and university activities.

Visiting Assistant Professor in Writing

The Department of English and Philosophy at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri, invites applications for a visiting assistant professor in Writing beginning August 2016 (appointment allows for a possible three-year employment with the potential of continuation following the third year). The successful candidate will be expected to teach a 4/4 load, with first-year writing comprising half the load. Remainder of load will come from courses in professional writing, creative writing, and general education literature surveys as appropriate to background of the hire.  Specialties of particular interest include professional and technical writing, especially science writing, as well as creative nonfiction and memoir.  Qualifications: Ph.D. or a terminal degree in Professional Writing, or Rhetoric, or Creative Writing; be able to demonstrate significant graduate study and practice of non-fiction writing; ABD may be considered.

Visiting Assistant Professor, Secondary English Education

The Department of English and Philosophy at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor with a specialization in Secondary English Education, appointment to begin August 2016.  Masters of Science in English Education required, Ph. D. preferred.

The English Department is committed to providing strong training for future teachers and to supporting their development in the areas of content knowledge, pedagogy, and global education issues.  The successful candidate will teach such undergraduate courses as Young Adult literature, Teaching Writing in the Middle and Secondary Schools, Teaching Methods in Secondary English Education, and Content Area Literacy Courses. The candidate will also travel to site locations to observe student teachers, establish positive working relationships with area schools, and collaborate in the planning and development of training materials and courses related to the education program as well as to the student teaching experience.

The successful candidate must have prior teaching experience in middle or secondary schools, as well as evidence of quality university teaching. The candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of current research literature and pedagogical theories relating to education, as well as experience working with student teachers.  Preferred skills include significant experience working with the Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Evaluation and various Missouri State Assessments, as well as a strong knowledge of the Missouri Learning Standards.

Adjunct Instructor, English

The English Department at Missouri Southern State University is seeking an Adjunct instructor(s) who will be able to teach first-year writing courses on campus beginning January 2016.
