Missouri Southern is a member of the Missouri Consortium for International Programs and Studies, which has been sponsoring the Missouri London Program since 1982. The MLP sends students to the University of Roehampton in southwest London (in the Wimbledon area). The University of Roehampton, with 9,000 students, is the only traditional campus university in the city; the bustling heart of central London is just six miles away.
Students can choose from the following academic areas:
- Biological Sciences
- Business and Management
- Communication and Media Studies: Film, Journalism, Photography
- Creative and Performing Arts: Dance, Drama
- Languages: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish
- Liberal Arts: History, Literature, Philosophy
- London Studies
- Social Sciences: Criminology, Sociology
- Sport, Exercise and Leisure
The tuition cost is £5,500 per semester (£5,312.50 if the MLP sends 10 or more students or £5,125 if the MLP sends 15 or more students). Rooms are single occupancy with shared kitchen facilities; a room with a private bathroom is £2,208.40 for the Fall semester and £3,313.45 for the longer Spring semester. A standard room with a shared bathroom is £1,943.20 for the Fall semester and £2,913.10 for the Spring semester. There is an optional Social Programme fee of £380; this includes evening events in and around London and guided day trips to cultural and historic locations in the U.K. MSSU students who are eligible can receive a study abroad grant to cover most or all of their airfare.
Roehampton does not have any insurance requirements, but suggests that students check with their existing coverage provider to make sure they will be covered for medical needs while abroad. MSSU recommends that students purchase International Student Identity Card insurance for $68. The British National Health Service advises all students to have a vaccination against meningitis before they begin their studies.
All on-campus accommodations are self-catering, so students cook for themselves. During the day there are standard university canteens serving hot food; students can always grab a pub-style meal in The Union bar. Roehampton will rent students a kitchen and bedding pack for £40.
Semester dates for Fall 2016: arrival day, Sept. 14; orientation, Sept. 15-17; classes start, Sept. 26; classes finish, Dec. 16; last departure date, Dec. 27.
Semester dates for Spring 2017: arrival day, Jan. 11; orientation, Jan. 12-14; classes start, Jan. 16; classes finish, March 31; spring vacation, April 3-21; consultation week, April 24-28; term ends, May 26; last departure date, May 26. Students can leave at the end of the exam period if they wish, although the majority stay for the Roehampton Summer Ball on the last weekend of the semester.
Students will enroll in 60 credits at Roehampton, which is the equivalent of 12-15 U.S. semester hours. As a guide, Roehampton says a 10-credit module is worth 3 U.S. semester hours, and a 20-credit module is worth 4-5 U.S. semester hours.
Application deadline is May 31 for the Fall semester, Oct. 31 for the spring semester, and April 1 for International Summer School. Applicants must have a minimum 2.8 GPA to be eligible and supply a faculty recommendation. Click here for the application.
