Emergency Medical Technician
The School of Health Sciences and the Department of Emergency Medical Services offer a certificate program preparing students to challenge the National Registry (NREMT) examination for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) registration. The program is closely integrated with area Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Centers. Classroom instruction is supplemented by clinical and field experience. Clinical training is arranged through area trauma/medical centers and advanced life support ambulance services. Required are a minimum of (24) hours in the hospital Emergency Department and (48) hours onboard an ALS ambulance. The program meets through one semester beginning each fall and spring semester. Classes meet for two (2) 4-hour sessions each week with occasional, pre-scheduled Saturday sessions.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course of study emphasizes instruction in emergency skills, such as managing respiratory, trauma, and cardiac emergencies, and patient assessment. Classroom instruction will be combined with clinical time in a hospital emergency department and an ambulance service. Students will learn and practice dealing with bleeding, fractures, airway obstruction, cardiac arrest, and emergency childbirth. Use and maintenance of common emergency equipment, such as backboards, suction devices, splints, oxygen delivery systems, and stretchers are also covered. With successful completion of the course, graduates are eligible to challenge state and national exams for certification and licensure eligibility. Those interested in continuing education should prepare for application to the Paramedic program.
The program meets all requirements of the National Standard Curriculum maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The MSSU Department of Emergency Medical Services is an accredited training entity for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and the Missouri Unit of Emergency Medical Services.
