Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The VITA program from Missouri Southern offers free tax preparation and filing for residents of the Joplin area that make less than $52,000/year as an individual or family. The VITA program is overseen by Dr. David Smith, CPA and Head of the Accounting, Economics & Finance Department at Missouri Southern State University. All volunteers are junior and senior accounting majors at MSSU and all have passed the required Internal Revenue Service Tests.

Services Provided

The VITA program can complete your federal 1040 or 1040A return and file the necessary state returns.  Schedules include A and B (itemized deductions and interest & dividend income), pension and social security income, child credit, child care credit, education credits, and EIC (Earned Income Credit). All forms will be filled out online and submitted electronically.

The VITA program cannot file Schedule C (Business Income) with more than $5,000 in income, certain types of self-employment income, or the Foreign Income Tax Credit.
