The Music Department of Missouri Southern State University is proud to offer a wide variety of musical and educational opportunities to students interested in career music-making or in musical enrichment. In addition to offering baccalaureate degrees in both applied music (performance) or music education (vocal, instrumental, or both), we also offer ALL interested student musicians the opportunity to continue to participate in outstanding groups like the Concert Chorale, Lion Pride Marching Band, the Southern Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Singers, the Symphonic Concert Band, Southern Exposure (show choir), the Southern Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Combos, the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, and the Percussion Ensemble. These groups are open to all eligible student musicians, regardless of their major. In addition to these participatory options, All MSSU students may also take Applied Music (private lessons) as an “Elective.” The options include piano, voice, guitar, brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion. A small applied music fee accompanies this option. Students may also Minor in Music. MSSU students can also select from several musical enrichment classes like Music Appreciation and World Music. And for those interested in musical enrichment for the young, we host an active and vibrant Suzuki string program.
We are delighted to offer small class sizes, instruction ONLY by highly-trained professors and regional professionals, and an “extended family” approach to our learning environment. Our facilities include large rehearsal rooms, classrooms, instructor studios, practice rooms, instrument and book storage, a computer lab, a MIDI/listening lab, a piano lab, a student lounge, and access to several on-campus concert venues including Taylor Auditorium, the region’s finest concert hall.
The “Universal Language” of music is spoken at Missouri Southern State University. Come join the discussion – become a part of our extended family of musical learners.
