Karen Turman completed her B.A. in French studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus in 2001 and subsequently received her M.A./ Ph.D. in French Literature with an emphasis in Applied Linguistics and a Certificate of College and University Teaching at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2013.  Her work centers on artistic countercultures and the intersection of the Gypsy figure, the artist and the jazz dancer/ musician in nineteenth-century Bohemian Paris.  In addition to teaching a variety of French language and literature courses at UCSB, she participated in the UCSB Department of French and Italian's teaching exchange program as a lecturer at the Université de Paris VIII in Saint-Denis, France (2010-2011).
