The role of the Library Student Assistant is an important one. The Library would not
function without the help of the student employee. The importance of their hard work
cannot be overstated as the Library's operational integrity and reputation rely upon a
well-trained staff providing excellent customer service.
The Library Student Assistant works approximately 15-20 hours a week in all
areas of the library doing all kinds of jobs--helping at service
desks, binding and repairing books, shelving books, sorting/delivering
mail, processing materials, maintaining copiers/printers/scanners
and much, much more.
Applications are available and should
be returned, upon completion, to the Main Circulation desk on the
third floor. A student worker schedule
form must accompany the application. As positions become available,
supervisors in the various departments will look through the applications,
check schedules and references, then select students to interview.
While several new students are hired each semester, the bulk of
the staff is made up of returning students, many of whom continue
to work in the library for several years.
Applications are kept
for the semester. After that, students may update their application
by attaching a current student worker schedule form.
There is no set list of qualifications for working in the library since job assignments are so
varied and new employees are trained extensively. However, it is important that the student possess
good communication and interpersonal skills. The library serves a broad range of people--faculty, staff,
undergraduates, graduate students, high school students and others from the community. It is important
that student workers maintain a professional and helpful attitude as they seek to provide quality service
to these groups.
