Where are the computer labs located in the library?
There are computer workstations for student use located on the
1st, 3rd and 4th floors of the library. There are limited computer
workstations for public use on the 1st and 3rd floors.
What are the hours for the computer labs?
Computer lab hours are the same as library
hours.
I m a MSSU student, how do I sign on to the workstations located in the
library?
Students who want to use a computer located in the library or
in another computer lab on campus will use their Missouri Southern
(MOSO) ID and password that is assigned to them.
This information will be listed on the financial statement you
will receive prior to every semester. If you forget your information
you can go to LionLink and
follow the instructions to access your personal information.
Also, you may present your MSSU student ID at the Reference desk,
either circulation desk or the computing services help desk (Mathews
Hall, 222), and a staff member will look up your information.
I m not a MSSU student; may I use a workstation?
There are select workstations on the 1st & 3rd floors of the library that
may be used by community patrons. You must present a photo ID
at either the Reference Desk (3rd floor) or Circulation 2 Desk
(1st floor) and sign in, in order to use a workstation. MSSU students
have priority and you might be asked to log-off if all other workstations
are in use. The University s computer
use policy applies to community users as well as MSSU students.
Which workstations have zip drives?
None of the computers in the library have zip drives. All of
the computers have CD RW and floppy drives as well as USB ports
for flash drives.
Does the Library have scanners?
There is one flatbed (8 1/2 x 11) scanner located at a specified
workstation on the 1st floor and a second scanner located on the
third floor. These workstations are accessed the same way as all
others (MOSO ID and password) and have saving capabilities but
not printing. A 30 minute time limit is enforced for these particular
workstations for ALL users.
Which workstations have CD burners?
All of the computers in the library have have CD burners.
Can I buy a floppy disk, zip disk, flash drive, set of headphones
or other computer assessories in the library?
Floppy disks may be purchased at the Main Circulation (3rd floor)
and Secondary Circulation(1st floor) desks for 50 cents. Recordable
CD's may be purchased at these same desks for 1 dollar. All other
supplies such as zip disks and headphones are available for purchase
through the University's bookstore located in the Billingsley
Student Center, but not at the Library.
Can I print my paper, spreadsheet, or graphs in the library? What is the
cost?
The 1st and 3rd floor computer labs are conntected to one color
and one B&W network printer. The floor floor lab is connected
to a B&W network printer only. At this time there is no per
page charge to use a printer for students, facutly or staff. Community
patrons do not have printing privleges. This arrangement is subject
to change if it is determined that a per page charge is warranted.
Can I print directly from the Internet?
Yes
How can I print in color?
All of the computer workstations in the library are set by default to print
from the B&W printers. To use the color printer you must choose it when
the print window pops up. In the 'Print' popup window select the color printer
option in the drop down menu.
How do I print on special paper such as resume or colored paper?
You must supply your own special paper. Once your document has
been selected for printing, select the color printer in the drop
down menu of the 'Print' window. Click the 'Properties' button.
Select the 'Paper/Quality' tab. Check 'force printing from a specific
tray...' Then select 'Tray 1' in the drop down menu. Your document
will not print until paper is manually fed into tray one of the
color printer. Please ask for assistance at the Reference desk,
if needed.
Are there any Apple computers?
There are no Apple computers available in the library.
What if I need to print a Works document in the library?
Open Microsoft Word. Go to "File" then "Open."
Select the 'A' drive and then choose 'All Files (*.*) in the Files
of type:' drop down menu. Choose the document to open and print.
WARNING: If there are any changes made and the document
is saved, then the document will be converted to Word. The file
might be able to be re-opened at the original computer workstation,
but there is a risk of corruption or encryption.
Can I use my laptop computer in the library to connect to
the SWAN, Central Search etc.?
Yes, but you must have either an Ethernet card and cord or a
wireless card. Instructions on how to set up a wireless connection
are available at every service desk in the library. Or see:

Can I access the card catalog (SWAN) from home?
Anyone is able to access the SWAN
from any computer with Internet access.
Can I access EbscoHost (or other online databases) from off campus?
Yes, simply enter your MOSO ID and password when prompted.
Why can t I use my cell phone on the 3rd floor of the library or chat,
play games or do instant messaging on the workstations on that floor?
The 3rd floor of the library is intended to be an area conducive to students
who are conducting scholarly activities. In a survey conducted by a consultant,
it was noted that cell phones ringing and persons talking on cell phones bothered
many people. It was decided to ban them from this floor and the quiet room
located on the 4th floor.
Chat, IM & game programs are prohibited on 3rd floor
computers because these computers are intended for scholarly activities. Chatting,
etc. may be done on workstations located on the 1st floor near the coffee
shop.
