WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE IN SOCIOLOGY?

Sociology is an extremely flexible and useful degree. In fact, the following people all earned their degrees in sociology:

The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

            Former President Ronald Reagan

Several members of Congress (including Maxine Waters and Tim Holden)

            Regis Philbin

            Robin Williams

Joe Theisman (NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback)

            Bobby Taylor (NFL Cornerback)

            Ahmad Rashad (sportscaster)

As you can see, a degree in sociology can be a springboard leading in many different directions. A few years ago we contacted some MSSU Sociology graduates to find out what jobs they were holding. These are some of their responses:

            Accountant                                      Payroll Clerk

            Admissions Coordinator               Pharmacist Assistant

            Attorney                                            Production Manager

            Caseworker                                      Registered Nurse Manager

            Church Administrator                  Rehab Educator

            College Professor                           School Manager

Deputy Juvenile Officer               social Services Director

            Human Resources Assistant       Social Worker

            Loan Officer                                                Teacher

            Manager                                           Youth Pastor

The ASA is the national association for sociologists in the United States today. This website contains information about careers and jobs, along with just about anything else you might want to know about sociology.

SOCIOLOGY AS A MINOR

The Sociology minor is the most flexible minor at MSSU.

Getting a minor in sociology requires SOC 110 (Introduction to Sociology) and ANY six additional sociology classes. The minor is set up this way to allow for maximum flexibility, allowing students to choose those sociology classes that best fit with their major.

For example, a student getting a degree to prepare them to go into the world of business might be interested in taking some of the following classes:

SOC 110 Introduction to Sociology               SOC 319 Social Interaction

SOC 322 Work and Leisure                          SOC 382 Ethnic Relations

SOC 303 The Arab World                             SOC 341 Gender Relations

Likewise, a student majoring in criminal justice might be interested in some of the following classes:

SOC 110 Introduction to Sociology               SOC 312 Juvenile Delinquency

SOC 351 Criminology                                     SOC 362 Deviant Behavior

SOC 391 Penology and Corrections              SOC 406 Child Abuse

Any student, regardless of major, who is interested in communities and community relations might benefit from taking some of the following classes:

SOC 110 Introduction to Sociology               SOC 210 Social Problems

SOC 221 Marriage and Family                                  SOC 311 Stratification

SOC 361 Demography                                               SOC 402 The Community

Although MSSU offers no minor in Anthropology, students might be interested in getting a minor in Social Sciences while taking the following classes:

ANTH 155 Physical Anthropology and Archeology

ANTH 302 North American Indians

ANTH 342 Comparative Cultures

ANTH 385 Language and Culture
