International Mission Task Force Report
|
Welcome to the MSSU's Department of Social Sciences. Our dedicated faculty and multiple programs allow us to offer exceptional educational opportunities to students with a wide range of future goals.
Outstanding Scholars When you take an Anthropology, Geography, History, Political Science, or Sociology course at Missouri Southern State University, chances are the professor teaching the class has published a book or article in that field of study. The Department of Social Sciences includes a Fulbright Scholar and thirteen published authors. Our professors have all presented research at national research conferences and three have published books over the past several years, including one of the most widely-used collective behavior textbooks in the country. We are dedicated to our mission as educators and we go out of our way to provide the very best education to every student. This is reflected in the fact that our professors all teach introductory courses along with upper-division courses. In fact, five social science professors have won the Outstanding Teaching Award at MSSU, and two of them have won it twice!
Multiple Programs for Maximum Flexibility MSSU offers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in History, International Studies, Political Science, and Sociology and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Political Science and Sociology. Also housed in the Social Sciecnes Department is the M.A. in History that we offer in conjunction with the University of Missouri - St. Louis. Many of our majors, especially Political Science majors, go on to law school because they know that our quality instruction prepares them well. Critical thinking, complex reasoning, and effective writing are skills that our majors learn and those are the same skills that lead to success in law school or any graduate program. MSSU students can also get a Bachelor of Secondary Education (B.S.E.) with a Major in Social Studies, specializing in History, Political Science, or Sociology.
Our department also offer minors in Geography, History, Latin American Studies, Paralegal Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science, Sociology, and Social Studies for Secondary Education.
In addition you may earn a certificate in Paralegal Studies. The certificate requires a total of 24 credit-hours (about 8 classes) qualifies you for employment as a paralegal. Attorneys in this area are anxious to hire our Paralegal Studies Certificate holders because they know that the Department of Social Sciences does an excellent job teaching students the things they need to know to excel in the workplace.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Social Science Department, or any of the faculty listed. We will do what we can to aid you in pursuing your degree.
