Safety & Security

Inmages of Residence LifeWho is around to protect my student?

When you leave your child for the first time at check-in, you are not just wishing them good luck and hoping for the best. You are leaving your child with a great support staff around them. The Residence Hall staff and the Department of Public Safety at Missouri Southern are here to assist the students.

The residence hall staff, both student and professional, are very accessible to your child. We have three full-time professional Resident Directors and 24 student Resident Assistants that live right where your child lives. Every night there is one Resident Director and seven Resident Assistants on duty to assist the students with whatever they may need. Whether the student locked themselves out of their room, is having trouble finding a building, or something in the room is not working properly, our staff will get the problem resolved. Some students may have a hard time adjusting to life away from home, have trouble in a class, or perhaps they might take too much advantage of their new freedom. Despite the situation, our staff is available to listen and if needed, give them some advise from their recent experiences. After all, it was not that long ago that our student staff members were dealing with the same transition to college that your child is going through. Your child is not alone here at Southern, they are surrounded by people who care. Ultimately we want to see your child grow as a person and succeed in life.

In addition to the Residence Hall staff, our Department of Public Safety (DPS) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have a DPS officer assigned specifically to the residence halls throughout the night. Even though our offices may close, DPS is visible throughout the complex for the students. Safety and security are emphasized throughout campus and are reflected through our policies. As a parent, you can rest assure that we do look out for our students’ best interest.
