SEG Presidents \
William N. Barkhouse
(1999 - 2000 )

Brief Biography

William Barkhouse, candidate for President-Elect, has been an active SEG member for 25 years and most recently served as General Chairman for the record breaking 1997 Annual Meeting and Exposition in Dallas. He is a member of the Special Programs Sponsorship Committee for the 1998 Annual Meeting in New Orleans and chairman of the Annual Meeting Advisory Committee.
Bill served as First Vice-President on the 1995-96 SEG Executive Committee and was co-general chairman for the first SEG/EGS Cairo '94 Pan African-Middle East Exploration & Development Geophysical Conference & Exposition. He has been a reviewer of interpretation case histories, a member of the Development and Production Committee, and chairman of the Student Sections/Academic Liaison Committee.
While he was president of the Southeastern Geo- physical Society (SGS) in 1987, New Orleans hosted the Annual Meeting, the Second SEG Gulf Coast Meeting, and the First Annual Gulf Coast SEG President's Meeting. He has been an SGS vice-president, secretary-treasurer, Continuing Education chairman, and editor of the Newsletter for the Dallas Geophysical/Geological Societies. He is a current member of the Dallas Geophysical Society and the EAGE, and prior member of the Southeastern, Potomac, and Pacific Geophysical Sections.
Bill currently leads Mobil's Exploration and Producing U.S. Center of Expertise for Exploration and Exploitation. His most recent positions have been as director of geoscience for Mobil's Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Business Unit, new business development manager in Mexico, and manager of geophysics worldwide for Mobil's international New Business Development.
Bill has a B.S. degree in applied geophysics from Michigan Technological University. He was a founding member of its SEG Student Section serving as treasurer. He started his geophysics career in airborne/ground electromagnetics and potential methods for mineral exploration prior to joining Mobil in the mid-1970s in petroleum exploration.

Position Statement

The SEG has been an integral part of my career allowing access to the finest minds in geo- physics in a personal and inclusive manner. I have had the opportunity to practice geophysics in dozens of geologic basins, countries, and cultures around the world. This has allowed me to develop a worldwide network of colleagues. My recent positions as First Vice-President of the SEG and General Chairman for the 1997 Annual Meeting have strongly prepared and qualified me to serve on the Executive Committee.
Sustaining the generation of new ideas is a priority issue:
With increasing "globalization" and "internationalization," technology and the SEG play a leading role in innovation and creativity. How does the SEG continue to effectively transfer and communicate its ideas and knowledge.
How does the SEG continue to globally foster the ability to compete and attract the "best and brightest" students to geophysics for lifelong careers.
Preparing for a new millennium, how does the SEG successfully articulate the present and future value of geophysics and ensure its unique and appropriate position within the ongoing global trend of process integration, business assimilation and rationalization.
Thank you, the membership, for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists!!!
