Type:

Tuning-fork controlled

Manufacturer:

Westrex Corporation, New York

Description:
The fork chronometer was built by the Times Facsimile about 1955. They built it for facsimile recording over telephone lines and needed an accurate time device. They developed the fork chronometer into a time piece that was good to one part in a million, nearly as good as the crystal chronometer. It was then adapted for several reasons; one of which is that it was smaller; secondly, it had a lot more power in the synchronous motor so getting it to run and keep it runing was a much simpler process. It used transistors so it had no tubes to burn out, etc. , although we had very modest problems with the crystal chronometer we had less problems with the fork chronometer. In the last years of 1957-59 we used the fork chronometer with the VM Pendulum Apparatus.
