Roy O. Lindseth
Roy Lindseth is the first recipient of the SEG Enterprise Award. Lindseth is being recognized specifically "for his courage and ingenuity in establishing Teknica Resource Development for the express purpose of extracting stratigraphic information from seismic data and supplying this service to the industry." According to Lindseth, "Over the years, there have been several transformations, and the base company is now Teknica Corporation, which holds all the Teknica group of companies." Lindseth has founded four companies. He believes, "the spirit of enterprise is more of a pattern than a single achievement."
Lindseth's early history and career in geophysics will not be duplicated here since it is well documented in Geophysics in the Affairs of Man, by Bates, Gaskell, and Rise; Traces Through Time, Finish; TLE April, 1987; and the SEG Honorary Membership Citation, by J. Dan Skelton.
I recall my first association with Lindseth. In 1967, SEG President Neal Smith asked me to organize the SEG Continuing Education program. My notes show that while on a trip to Calgary, on January 29, 1968, Richard Clawson, Chevron, suggested that I talk to Lindseth regarding a course. He accepted my invitation and agreed to teach Recent Advances in Digital Data Enhancements Techniques during the first year (1968) of the SEG Continuing Education courses. The success of Lindseth's course is legend; he has taught it in more than 44 countries around the world.
Attesting to Lindseth's genius are the following honors which he has received in his native Canada: Meritorious Service Award, Honorary Member, and Gold Medal, all from the CSEG; J. Tuzo Wilson Medal, Canadian Geophysical Union; Centennial Award and Honorary Member, both from the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta; Queens Jubilee Medal; Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, University of Calgary; Canadian Industry Development Award; and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Lindseth has been honored by SEG with the Kauffman Gold Medal, 1970; the SEG Presidency, 1976; and Honorary Membership, 1985.
He is a rare, quiet, gentle, humble, and unassuming giant among the geophysicists of the world. He has enriched the lives of all mankind. Lindseth shares the Enterprise Award with his partner, his lovely and understanding wife, Lucy. Lucy has shared and contributed to his dreams and aspirations, his courage and ingenuity, his achievements and successes.
All geophysicists are proud of Roy O. Lindseth, and I am especially honored for the privilege of writing this citation. It is friends like Roy and Lucy who make life really worth living.
