Dr. Christie Cathey, Social Psychologist


Dr. Cathey earned her B.A. in Psychology from Hendrix College and her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Connecticut and has been at MSSU since 2002.

Her primary research interests relate to cultural psychology and specifically focus on how the interaction of culture and power affects people’s social behavior and thinking as well as their attitudes toward a variety of social policies, such as human rights.

Dr. Cathey also conducts research on the scholarship of teaching. She has published several articles and given numerous conference presentations on how to use advances in technology to enhance traditional, seated classes.

Having studied abroad for two years (in Oxford, England and Grenoble, France), Dr. Cathey is passionate about international education and has taken several groups of MSSU students to France and China to conduct cross-cultural research. Most recently, she was a visiting professor in 2009 at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China where she taught courses and conducted research through the University’s newly re-established Department of Psychology.

At MSSU, Dr. Cathey regularly teaches General Psychology, Social Psychology, Theories of Personality, and Senior Thesis and has also taught Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences and a variety of special topics courses, including Cultural Psychology.
