History of TRIO at MSSU

 

 
 

TRIO is a collection of educational opportunity Programs funded by the United States Department of Education.  TRIO first came to MSSU in 1999 when the campus was awarded a grant for an Upward Bound Program.  Upward Bound assists high school students who are from lower income backgrounds and are the first in their families to go to college.  Please visit their website at www.mssu.edu/upwardbound for more information.

In 2001, MSSU was awarded the grant that funds Project Stay.  The “TRIO name” for Project Stay is Student Support Services.  We changed the name to Project Stay to avoid confusion with other offices on campus.  If you are on another campus and hear reference to a Student Support Services program, it is likely a sister program to Project Stay.

For now, our Project can serve 170 students.

In 2006, MSSU was awarded a grant for a Talent Search program.  Talent Search is a program that provides information to students in grades 6-12 about college preparation. 

There are several other TRIO programs funded through the United States Department of Education.  They include Educational Opportunity Centers, a program that provides school re-entry assistance to students who have dropped out and McNair, a program providing assistance to college students planning to attend graduate school.
