JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - A recommendation from MSSU President, Dr. Julio León to cut tuition by more than 1.5 percent was unanimously approved by the Board of Governors during the group's regular meeting Monday, Nov. 29. The MSSU action counters a national trend of expected tuition increases each year.

The step was one of four major developments related to tuition, fees, scholarships and admissions procedures that are designed to increase affordability and accessibility to higher education.

For the third consecutive year, the University administration held room and board costs at their current levels.

In addition, the University will offer a new scholarship for students qualifying through high school A+ programs and enrollment procedures have been simplified. Beginning fall 2005, MSSU is offering an A+ Leadership Scholarship valued at $1,000 per year for up to 100 students. (See the A+ Leadership Fact Sheet below.)

The University’s simplified enrollment process will drop the use of an Index to determine admission. Beginning fall 2005, students who meet any of the following criteria will be considered admissible: ACT of 21 or higher or; Top half rank in class or; 2.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale. The University previously used an Index formula to guide enrollment decisions.

“By reducing tuition, adding new scholarships, holding the line on room and board costs and simplifying the admissions process, Missouri Southern continues a tradition of making higher education affordable and accessible,” commented President León.

The unprecedented move to lower tuition drops Southern’s rate to $125 per credit hour, compared to the current $127 per credit hour for in-state students. Southern’s tuition is already the lowest of any four-year university or college in the state. Dr. León said the move is designed to address mounting concerns over accessibility issues.

“We have been very concerned that it is becoming more difficult for an average family to obtain a high quality and affordable university education for their children. Our actions are in line with those who created this institution in the 1960s - to provide an affordable and high quality education for the benefit of the people in this area.”

Missouri Southern started to address the tuition trend last year when the University froze its tuition rate for the current academic year.
