JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern State University Speech and Debate Squad competed in the Washburn University Capital City Classic tournament in Topeka, Kan., Feb. 3-4.

There were 33 tournament debaters in the Lincoln-Douglas (LD) debate division from eight colleges and universities representing five states.

Kelly Larson, Director of Forensics at MSSU, says at the tournament in the Lincoln Douglas debate, sophomore Michael Baca of Neosho, Mo., qualified for elimination rounds.

Baca went to the semi-final round before losing to a debater from Washburn University on a 4-1 decision.

Baca also won an individual speaker award finishing in eighth place.

Larson says the team is now off until this weekend when members travel to Boston for the Simmons/Suffolk University swing debate tournaments Feb. 10-13.
