ambassadoreliotJOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Career diplomat and former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, Theodore L. (Ted) Eliot, will speak at Missouri Southern State University on Thursday, Oct. 21.

Ambassador Eliot will speak to three classes during his visit to MSSU. They include:
  • 9:30 a.m.-10:45 a.m., International Terrorism, Justice Center Auditorium
  • 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Political Parties and Elections, Webster Hall, Room 208
  • 1 p.m.-1:45 p.m., Comparative Politics in Developed Countries, Webster Hall, Room 208
The International Terrorism Class (9:30-10:45 a.m.) has been moved to the Auditorium in the Mills Anderson Criminal Justice Center.

Theodore L. Eliot, Jr. was a career US Foreign Service Officer for 30 years, including tours in Sri Lanka, Germany, the Soviet Union, Iran and, from 1973 to 1978, as US Ambassador to Afghanistan. Eliot was the last American ambassador to serve in Afghanistan before the Soviet invasion.

His Washington assignments included Executive Secretary (1969-73) and Inspector General of the Department of State (1978). From 1978 to 1985, Ambassador Eliot was Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

He is a founder and member of the American Academy of Diplomacy and has served on a number of corporate and non-profit boards. He is a member of Diplomats and Military Commanders for Change (www.diplomatsforchange.com).
