JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - A September 11 memorial service and dedication of a memorial "Flag of Freedom" plaza will be held at Missouri Southern State College at 8 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11. The memorial service will take place in Taylor Performing Arts Center on the Missouri Southern campus. Area veterans, firefighters, police officers and community representatives will take part. "The terrorists' attack on America brought the entire world to a stop and changed all of our lives," said Dr. Julio León, College President. "We wanted to provide a way for our students, faculty, staff and the community to share in the observance and remembrance of the victims of this horrific tragedy as well as remember the heroic actions of our fellow Americans and the wave of support that came to us from around the world." Part of the service will be testimonials from local residents who visited Ground Zero in New York City, said Kelly Wilson, Director of the Student Support Center at Missouri Southern and coordinator of the memorial service. Following the service, a dedication of a "Flag of Freedom" will take place on the campus oval near Billingsly Student Center. A donor who wishes to remain anonymous funded construction of the memorial plaza that will feature a 20-foot by 38-foot American flag raised on a 100-foot pole. The memorial will feature the words "Flag of Freedom Memorial" and "Dedicated September 11, 2002" in 3-inch brass lettering embedded in imprinted, textured and colored concrete. The flag will be visible for miles as it waves from the highest point on the College campus. The memorial will be illuminated at night with 1000-watt lights on 12-foot poles. "We hope as many as possible from the campus and general public will participate in this important time of remembrance and in the dedication ceremony," said Dr. León. |
