JOPLIN, MO (SNS) The Board of Regents of Missouri Southern State College was informed at its meeting Wednesday, Sept. 18 that enrollment for the Fall Semester stood at 5, 823 students. Last year's figure on census date was 5, 896. On a full-time equivalent basis, enrollment was down 45 students from last year. President Julio León said, "We are very pleased with these numbers. Because we had instituted higher admission standards, and because of the tuition increase, we were expecting a drop in enrollment of about 175 students." The Board also viewed a videotaped presentation on the state budget situation and the prospects for upcoming years. President León said, "The fiscal situation in the state is so bleak that, even if the economy recovers, the state will have a difficult time maintaining a good level of state services or funding for public schools and colleges." In other action, Dr. Terri Agee, Vice President for Business Affairs, reported that bids will be opened this week for the construction of two traffic lights, one on Newman Road between the MSSC campus and student Residence Halls and another on Duquesne Road near Fred G. Hughes stadium. |
