JOPLIN , MO (SNS) - Nearer is the title of a new book of essays by Dr. Arthur Saltzman, professor of English at Missouri Southern State University.

A sale and signing will be held at Hastings 526 S. Rangeline in Joplin from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, March 11.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Saltzman came to Missouri Southern after graduating from the University of Illinois in 1979. He is the author of eight books including This Mad Instead, Designs of Darkness in the Contemporary American Fiction, The Novel in The Balance and Objects and Empathy.

His creative writing has appeared journals including Gettysburg Review, Iowa Review, Black Warrior Review, Ohio Review, River City, Fiction International, Gulf Coast and Mid-American Review.

Awards for his writing include the First Series Creative Nonfiction Award (Mid-List Press, 2001), Nebraska Review Creative Nonfiction Award, Roy Ames Memorial Essay Award (Literal Latte), Columbia Nonfiction Award, Victor J. Emmett Memorial Essay Award and six Pushcart Prize nominations.

Dr. Saltzman won the Missouri Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003.

His collection of essays, Objects and Empathy, also available at Hastings, won the First Series Creative Nonfiction Award from Mid-List Press in 2001.
