JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Successful young
scientists were introduced at the awards ceremony of the 2004 Missouri
Southern Regional Science Fair. The ceremony was held in Anderson
Auditorium, in the Mills Anderson Criminal Justice Center on the
Missouri Southern campus at 6:30 pm, Thursday, March 31.
The two top winners will soon start preparing to compete against
approximately 1,200 other high school students from around the world at
the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
Every year ISEF-affiliated fairs from around the world send
their top two individual projects to the May ISEF. Forty students from
fourteen high schools in the Southwest Missouri/Southeast Kansas region
competed in the senior division of the fair.
The two students who will advance to the Intel ISEF are Chelsey
Ryan Hall and Sarah Renee Kropf, both from Seneca High School. The
students are sponsored by Shannon Sample, a science teacher at Seneca.
Hall synthesized new analogs of the several commercial antibacterial
agents in killing bacteria. Kropf examined the effect of retention of
information of students while listening to music.
Hall and Kropf will travel to Phoenix, Arizona along with their
sponsor to participate in the ISEF.
Logan Skelley of Joplin High School and Scott Bartkoski of
Neosho High School were selected as first and second alternates, in the
event that either Hall or Kropf will be unable to compete at the ISEF in
Phoenix.
In addition to the winners selected to move on to the
international competition, senior high students in seven categories were
awarded one-year, full-tuition scholarships to Missouri Southern State
University.
It takes the work of over 100 volunteers to make this Fair
happen each year. Seeing the interaction of the students with
professionals at the Fair makes all of our hard work worthwhile,
said Dr. Michael Garoutte, fair director.
This year more than 1 million students in grades 9-12 are
competing in Intel ISEF-affiliated fairs, such as the Missouri Southern
Regional Science Fair. The Intel ISEF will give students from all 50
states and more than 40 countries the chance to compete for more than $3
million in cash and scholarships.
Missouri Southern also sponsors a Junior Fair for middle
schoolers. Shannon Gray of N.E. Vernon County and Gannon Ewing of Thomas
Jefferson Independent Day School were the Grand Prize winners from more
than 130 projects submitted from southwest Missouri junior high and
middle schools.
Grand Prize winners each receive a cash award of $75. The annual
Sunrise Optimist Club Outstanding Teacher/Sponsor Award has been given
since the 8th Annual Missouri Southern Regional Science Fair. The winner
for 2004 is Susan Hogard of Carl Junction Junior High School.
The award has the status of the Grand Prize given to the two
leading student projects, and the winner receives an engraved plaque or
paperweight and $100 cash. The purpose of this award is to reward the
teacher or sponsor who serves as the research supervisor for the largest
number of high quality projects (senior and/or junior division) in a
given year..
