JOPLIN , MO (SNS) - Missouri Southern State University Speech and Debate Squad recently competed in the Ohio State Fun Frolic Debate tournament. A total of 61 tournament debaters from 35 colleges and universities representing 16 states took part in the tournament Dec. 1-5 in Columbus, Ohio. Activities took place at Ohio State University and at nearby Otterbein College. On Saturday, Dec. 3, Missouri Southern finished in third place for Lincoln Douglas (LD) sweepstakes at the Ohio State University part of the tournament. David Reed , freshman from Cassville, Mo., and Michael Baca, sophomore from Neosho, Mo., finished with 3-3 records and just barely missed qualifying for elimination rounds. Victor Cook , freshman from Powell, Mo., finished with a 4-2 record and just missed qualifying for elimination rounds in the junior varsity division of Lincoln-Douglas debate. On Sunday, Dec. 4 at the Otterbein College part of the tournament 36 debaters from 10 schools represented eight states. Both Michael Baca and Victor Reed just barely missed the elimination rounds posting 2-2 records. MSSU debaters are now off until the end of January 2006, when they will travel to St. Louis to compete in the Webster University Gorlock Classix, according to Kelly B. Larson, Missouri Southern Forensics Director.
