JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - All of those interested in dance are invited to attend three performances of traditional Indian dance performed by members of the Natya Dance Theatre Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5 at Missouri Southern State College.

The Natya Dance Theater was founded in 1975 by internationally-renown dancer, choreographer and educator Hema Rajagopalan. Since then, she has received seven National Endowment for the Arts choreography awards and an Emmy award. The company's 20 dancers and four musicians perform for nearly 50,000 people in the U.S. each year.

There is no charge to attend any of the three performances, which will take place at the following times and locations:
  • 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, Mills Anderson Justice Center: This presentation features a lecture/demonstration of the Pushpanjali dance (offering of flowers) by Krithika Rajagopalan, director of the company, followed by a class for up to 50 people. The class will include excerpts from Varnan and Padam, a dialogue between a dancer and her lover.
  • 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, Taylor Peforming Arts Center: This prelude to a Saturday evening of dancing, features Krithika Rajagopalan, director of the company and an hour-long music concert.
  • 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, Taylor Performing Arts Center: The Natya Dance Theater presents Shakti Chakra-The Energy Cycle, traditional Indian dance with Hindu mythology, exotic costumes, native songs and instruments. Shakti Chakra portrays the five activities of God according to Hindu philosophy. Every activity is interpreted through expressional dance and is preceded by an abstract segment using pure dance movements to convey the idea.
The Missouri Southern Institute of International Studies is sponsoring the Natya Dance Theater's visit to Missouri Southern as part of activities surrounding "The India Semester" at MSSC. Those wanting more information should contact Dr. Chad Stebbins at (417) 659-9736.
